Cosmetic bonding is a composite tooth bonding technique that can work wonders for your smile. Using materials that match the shade, translucency and texture of your teeth, tooth gaps can be closed, spots, chips, mis-aligned teeth can be bonded to reshape your smile and discolorations can be eliminated, and your self-confidence can be enhanced through the improved appearance of your smile. It's also great for an instant repair of a broken front tooth.
Bonding is similar to veneers, but not as strong, but it is a low-cost way to improve your smile. The dental bonding procedure utilizes a composite resin and is used for a variety of structural as well as cosmetic purposes. Basically, bonding will cover any natural flaws applying a thin coating of a plastic material on the front surface of your teeth. Bonding is a composite resin filling placed in the back teeth as well as the front teeth. One disadvantage of dental bonding is that it has a tendency to stain over time and in general isn't as lasting or durable as other cosmetic dental procedures. However, if dental bonding does chip or break it can usually be easily patched or repaired.
When teeth are chipped or slightly decayed, bonded composite resins may be the material of choice. First, the tooth structure is cleaned and etched. Then a clear adhesive is applied to the area needing bonding. Once applied, a tooth colored bonding material is placed on the tooth. It is permanently hardened and fused to the tooth with a hand held white light. This process is called photo curing. The tooth is finished by further shaping and polishing to match the sheen of the rest of your tooth - the before and after effects can be amazing. Bonding makes a great tooth colored filling for small cavities and broken or chipped surfaces. It can also be used sometimes to close spaces between teeth. Additionally, it is used to cover the entire outside surface of a tooth to change its color and shape. For the latter two applications, bonding has its limits. It may not be strong enough, aesthetic enough, or durable enough for certain individual situations. When these problems occur, the next choice would be porcelain veneers.
Our patients are amazed with their new attractive, natural looking smile following the bonding procedure. Cosmetic Dentistry is more than just making your teeth look their best... it is restoring beauty, function, strength, and health to the teeth and their supporting gum tissues.
